Underneath the stop dowels we can see small, light colored wooden levers. These levers sit up against the metal rod, so when the stops are pulled these small levers push down on the rods, activating them to perform their designated function (you can see from the previous three photos what these rods look like). Although many organs have different stop lever configurations, they all do the same thing.
